The reclamation of Jurong Island was officially completed in 2009, ahead of schedule. This was a significant milestone in Singapore’s industrial development as it marked the success of a bold vision to join seven southern islands with an intial area of 1,000ha to form a land mass of 3,000ha. The Island has enabled JTC to market the chemicals hub more holistically to investors.
JTC constantly looks into enhancing the infrastructure and operating environment of the Island. Many new projects are being explored. This includes a feasibility study on a second road link connecting Jurong Island to the mainland to facilitate the daily commute of the Island’s growing workforce. A barging terminal is also being built to provide safe movement of hazardous products in and out of Jurong Island.
Studies are also conducted on schemes to utilise waste heat to power production processes at the system level, and to explore synergistic opportunities for the “cold” energy from the LNG Terminal with the chemicals industry on Jurong Island. Sea water desalination is also being studied as an alternative water source on the Island.
