Page Content Jurong Island History
Jurong Island boasts of a rich history formed from the amalgamation of seven small islands into a world-class chemicals hub.
Sleepy, idyllic islands on the rim of the world's busiest portLocated at the crossroads of the world's major shipping routes, Singapore is home to the world's busiest container port. Back then, this hive of activity largely bypassed a group of seven idyllic islands just south of Singapore. These islands were Pulau Ayer Chawan, Pulau Ayer Merbau, Pulau Merlimau, Pulau Pesek, Pulau Pesek Kecil, Pulau Sakra and Pulau Seraya.
1960s: Tiny islands become home to oil giants
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, three oil companies decided to house their facilities on the islands. The companies were Esso on Pulau Ayer Chawan, Singapore Refinery Company on Pulau Merlimau and Mobil Oil on Pulau Pesek.
1980s: Singapore identifies chemicals sector as a cluster for economic growthThese three oil companies became the pioneers of Singapore's petroleum industry. In the 1980s, when the Singapore Government identified the chemicals sector as a vehicle for the nation's economic growth, it was natural to develop these islands into a petrochemicals hub.
1990s: JTC appointed as agent to develop Jurong IslandIn 1991, JTC was appointed the agent for the development of the Jurong Island project. Working closely with various government agencies, JTC delivered the necessary infrastructure and services to the islands in the form of roads, drains, utilities and other services.
Today: Future-ready
Today, Jurong Island is home to more than 94 leading petroleum, petrochemical, specialty chemical and supporting companies, with a total gross investment of about $34 billion. The Island is getting ready for the future with the Jurong Island Version 2.0 (JIv2.0) initiative.
Today, Jurong Island embodies Singapore's stature as a global chemicals hub to take us into the next century.
