Road Safety on Jurong Island
Over 90 multi-national chemical and petrochemical companies make their home on Jurong Island. These companies account for a total of S$31 billion in fixed asset investments on the island. Over the next ten years, Jurong Island is poised for even stronger growth.
Increased business activity brings with it a surge in vehicular traffic on the island, putting the spotlight on road safety. Thus far, the number of road accidents on Jurong Island has been low. However, more can be done to reduce the occurrence of accidents and to create a better traffic environment for all.
In this spirit, the Traffic Police, Clementi Police Division, the Land Transport Authority and JTC came together to implement the installation of traffic warning signs at designated locations and to conduct road safety dialogues between Traffic Police and the association of heavy vehicle owners
The following measures to promote road safety are also on-going:
a) Increasing Traffic Police patrols and empowering Auxiliary Police Officers to issue summons
b) Organising Road Safety Exhibitions
c) Meetings and discussions with companies whose personnel are involved in road accidents
d) Issuance of road safety brochures to motorists
e) Conducting road safety education seminars and dialogues with Jurong Island companies
Moving forward, the Authorities together with JTC will further implement these measures:
a) Introducing additional road markings and speed regulating strips
b) Installing speed enforcement camera system
It must be emphasised that the Authorities alone cannot make our roads safe despite the best traffic management strategies. To ensure that our roads stay safe and accident free, we need everyone, including company employees, suppliers, contractors and other stakeholders to be responsible motorists.
Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
