Jurong Island: Powering the future of low-carbon innovation

As a trusted energy and chemicals hub, Jurong Island must meet demands arising from global megatrends, the energy transition, and sustainability requirements. Alongside its companies, Jurong Island is transforming to capture growth opportunities and power low-carbon innovation. 

Companies can test and scale innovations in clean technologies and circular solutions, which will also create a supportive ecosystem that enables data centres to tap into low-carbon and energy-efficient systems. 

Jurong Island is a living lab to pilot new energy solutions and integrate it into its ecosystem. Companies can trial next-generation fuels such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrogen, ammonia, in real industrial settings, with access to shared pipelines, storage and facilities that reduce cost and complexity.

The growth potential for specialty chemicals and sustainable materials is immense. Jurong Island brings together companies across the value chain and provides a platform for the R&D and production of specialty chemicals and sustainable materials.

As digital transformation accelerates, so must the development of sustainable digital infrastructure. To advance Singapore's vision of becoming a digital economy powerhouse, Jurong Island will be home to a data centre park. The park sits at the heart of a national initiative to scale carbon-efficient, future-ready infrastructure, and it will leverage Jurong Island's integrated ecosystem to offer operators resource efficiency, lower costs, and accelerated deployment.

Jurong Island is attracting companies seeking growth opportunities through facility expansions and new openings. For example, Japanese chemical company Kuraray is investing in a plant producing high-performance resin for sustainable food packaging.

Created to prove that sustainable manufacturing can be more wholistic, Arkema's new plant on Jurong Island is the world’s largest integrated factory dedicated to advanced bio-circular materials. The factory produces high-performance bio-based polymers that can be used as raw materials, right at the start of the manufacturing processes.

A*STAR's ISCE² collaborates with industry partners to develop practical solutions. The institute is piloting CO₂ conversion into sustainable aviation fuel, transforming incineration ash into construction materials, and converting methane into hydrogen. Evonik (pictured) opened a new alkoxides production facility on Jurong Island, producing catalysts for biodiesel, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. Long-standing industry names such as ExxonMobil are also upgrading facilities—its multi-billion-dollar CRISP project converts bottom-of the-barrel crude products into higher-value base stocks for automotive and industrial sectors.
