Transforming Jurong Island into a sustainable energy and chemicals park

Under the Green Economy pillar of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, Jurong Island is envisioned to be transformed into a sustainable energy and chemicals park.

In line with this, the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) has released a report outlining our long-term aspirations and targets, as well as the key initiatives and enablers to support this transformation.

JTC SolarLand Programme

Turning vacant land into a clean energy source

JTC's SolarLand programme is turning vacant land on Jurong Island into a solar farm, generating sustainable, renewable and affordable clean energy to supplement Singapore's electricity grid. In 2023, JTC awarded a tender for its largest solar deployment, covering 60 hectares. This will increase solar capacity to 142.2MWp, power over 33,400 HDB flats and reduce carbon emissions by 63,220 tonnes, annually. The initiative accelerates Singapore’s clean energy transition, with JTC aiming for 100MWp by 2030.

Greening Efforts

Cultivating green spaces island-wide

More greenery not only improves Jurong Island’s aesthetics, it lowers the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, making it a more pleasant place to work in.

Businesses know this well, which is why they worked with JTC and the National Parks Board (NParks), and contributed funds to plant 34,000 more trees on the island. With greenery at every corner you turn, this community-driven programme has created a more attractive working environment for everyone.

The Jurong Island pond is a nature-based solution engineered to combat climate change-driven flooding.

Jurong Island Pond: Natural Flood-Resilience

To combat climate change-driven flooding, JTC has built a nature-based solution that uses the island's sandy terrain to collect and manage rainwater from extreme storms. The pond channels up to 125,000m3 of water into an underground aquifer, naturally releasing it into the sea. Designed by JTC engineers, this multifunctional solution eliminates the need for complex drainage systems while supporting Jurong Island’s transformation into a sustainable E&C park.
